Story Behind the Drawing

From the time Cressida could fly, it was clear that she was not like the other owls. While the others departed the Tree at dusk like silent sentinels, ready to guard the wild wilderness from even wilder threats, Cressida would sneak away to the tippiest top of the tallest branch and sit there, fully entranced by the moon, listening to its silent conversation. At first, her brothers and sisters did not understand why Cressida never joined them on their midnight flights. However, they soon realized that, while their hearts were made of wood and roots and leaves, Cressida’s heart was made of something different—something intangible. Many years later, when she could stand to be separated from her friend no longer, Cressida flew into the black expanse of the sky and landed on the moon, where she lived out the rest of her life. Today, Cressida’s Constellation, which can be seen on the first day of each lunar cycle, serves as a physical reminder of the owl’s abundant love and quiet strength.
