Story Behind the Drawing
Calliope enters Dauphine House clad in an orange velvet robe, the color of glowing embers, and a mask that resembles butterfly wings. She has arrived for the Grand Delphinium Ball, a masquerade party held each year in Cormar, France, to celebrate the first blooms of the spring season. Inside, she takes off her coat and admires the thousands of delphiniums hanging from the ceiling—an enchanting sea of blue, purple, and white petals swaying gently overhead. To her right, she sees Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Fox greeting guests, and to her left, she spots bluejays restocking the dessert buffet with entremets and eclairs. In the middle of it all, however, is the ballroom, where most of the guests are already dancing in unison to a chorus of harps and horns. Calliope moves to the center of the room, finding her own rhythm amongst the crowd, until one by one, butterflies flock to the room to join her in a dance. The lights dim save for a spotlight on Calliope, and the crowd steps back to watch as she and the butterflies spin, jump, and float together in spontaneous, yet choreographed, movements. In this moment, Calliope becomes who she was always meant to be: the Monarchs’ Muse, the Lady of the Dance.
